Self-hosted automation cost in 2026

Self-hosting means running open-source automation software on your own server, so you pay for the server — not a per-run subscription. n8n, Activepieces, Automatisch, Node-RED are free, open-source and self-hostable: their cost is just the VPS (plus a database at scale), which our engine models from about $8/mo. Against paid cloud the maths is one-sided: self-host runs about $8/mo at 1,000 runs versus $10.59 for the cheapest paid cloud plan, and the gap widens to $45 vs $214.31 at 100,000 runs, because a server bill is roughly flat while cloud is priced per run. One honest caveat: a free cloud tier (Activepieces, up to 10 active flows at $0) can undercut self-host on raw cost for very small usage. And self-host is only “free” if you don’t count your own time to set up, secure, monitor and back up the server.

Self-host vs paid cloud: cost at each volume

Cheapest self-host (rented VPS) vs cheapest paid managed-cloud plan, 3-step workflows, generated live from our data. Self-host figures are the server bill (VPS + database), not a tool fee. Free cloud tiers are excluded from the table and discussed below.

VolumeCheapest self-hostCheapest paid cloudCheaper
1,000 runs/mo$8 n8n$10.59 MakeSelf-host
5,000 runs/mo$8 n8n$18.82 MakeSelf-host
20,000 runs/mo$25 n8n$64.71 MakeSelf-host
100,000 runs/mo$45 n8n$214.31 MakeSelf-host
Two honest catches: (1) self-host figures cover only the server (VPS + database) — they exclude your time to install, secure, update, monitor and back up the stack, which for a small team can outweigh the saving. (2) A free cloud tier (Activepieces, up to 10 active flows at $0) can undercut self-host on raw cost for very small usage. The software is free and open-source; the figure shown is infrastructure. Frequently asked questions

Versus paid cloud, usually yes on cost: self-hosted n8n runs on a flat VPS bill (from about $8/mo) with no per-run fees, while n8n Cloud and other paid plans climb with usage. The trade-offs are your own time to set up, secure and maintain the server — and that a free cloud tier can be cheaper still for very small usage. Model your exact numbers in the calculator.
Only the server it runs on. Our engine models n8n, Activepieces, Automatisch, Node-RED self-hosted from about $8/mo (small VPS, low volume) up to higher tiers as throughput grows and you add a database — the software itself is free and open-source.
Against paid cloud, self-host is cheaper at every volume in our data — about $8 vs $10.59 at 1,000 runs, widening to $45 vs $214.31 at 100,000 runs. The exception is free cloud tiers (up to ~10 flows), which can undercut self-host for small usage. See the table above.
n8n, Activepieces, Automatisch, Node-RED are open-source and self-hostable. Make, Zapier and Pipedream are cloud-only. If you need EU data residency or full control, the self-hostable open-source tools are the ones to look at.
